Madison Area Technical College has already sent two teams to the national championship this year. In the second week of June, a Madison College golfer will be added to that list.

The Madison College golf team's rising star, Andrew Steinhofer, is preparing to compete in his first national championship after qualifying individually at the NJCAA Region IV Tournament back in October.

In just his first year at Madison College, Steinhofer, a native of Madison and graduate of Madison LaFollette High School, has already set school records for the lowest 36-hole score (142) and lowest season average (73.5). His play on the course has been impressive throughout the season.

"Statistically, he is the best golfer to ever play for Madison College," said Madison College golf team head coach Bill Scheer.

Steinhofer, who qualified individually for the national tournament over six months ago, shot a 227 over a three-day period in the NJCAA Region IV Tournament. He finished the tournament with the best individual score, earning him the honors of representing his school at the national championship.

The national championship will be held from June 7-11 in Chautauqua, N.Y. this year. Steinhofer, who will be traveling to New York for the first time, is excited for the trip.

"Hopefully we can do a little sightseeing while we're down there," he said.

As excited as he is, he's also ready to get down to business.

"I'm coming to play, I'm always looking to win," Steinhofer said when asked about his expectations going into the tournament.

Scheer, who will be accompanying Steinhofer to the tournament, believes that he will be ready for the challenge.

"You never have to tell him to practice and he can do some special things," Scheer said.

Practicing has become easier now that the spring weather has allowed Steinhofer and his teaamates to get back on the golf course. After a long winter hiatus, the team needs all the practice they can get to return to form.

"After taking such a long break, it takes some time to get back in rhythm," Scheer said.
