But in an already packed time slot filled with sitcoms and medical dramas, is this new series worth your investment? If Hollywood's blockbuster hit "300" did not appeal to you, this won't either. If it did, this is for you. Creator Steven S. DeKnight says he was greatly inspired by the Zach Snyder film while crafting his series.
In addition to both the film and series sharing the setting and themes of ancient Rome, both are shot through a gritty camera filter.
The story follows Spartacus (played by Australian actor Andy Whitfield), a ridiculously fit Thracian warrior who swears himself to the Roman army in exchange for the protection of his village. When the agreement is broken he lashes out and chaos follows. After being captured, Spartacus is taken to the Coliseum to be executed with the rest of his men while his wife (played by actress Erin Cummings) is sold into slavery.
But it doesn't end there. A hero by nature, Spartacus survives, wins the crowd over and is sold to the local gladiator school. Here the plot thickens with the introduction of new dominating characters.
Some would argue that the bulk of the series is just a giant blood orgy, but aside from the nudity and violence, "Spartacus: Blood Sand," tells an exceptional story. With great production values and a strong cast, the large budget is put to good use. If this sounds like your kind of television, check it out on Fridays and Sundays at 9:00 p.m. on Starz to catch up on this promising new series.
