There have been scores of werewolf films, sequels and remakes spanning every genre imaginable. The latest addition to the werewolf movie epidemic, "The Wolfman," is set in the 19th century, directed by Joe Johnston and told with the help of superstar actors Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro, Hugo Weaving and up-and-coming actress Emily Blunt.

The movie opens with Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) being summoned from his successful acting career in America back to his homeland after news of his brother's death. He stays at his family's estate with his estranged father (Hopkins) and his brother's wife, Gwen (Blunt). Lawrence learns his brother died while in the woods under a full moon and his body was savagely mutilated; no one knows what happened. After some investigation and a trip to the local gypsy village he learns that a massive, ferocious beast is responsible for his brother's demise.

This film tries to be many things: a tragic love story, a thriller and an action-packed blood bath, all while still having a rich and, somewhat, deep plot.

Unfortunately, the romance between Gwen and Lawrence was boring and unbelievable because it flared up only weeks after her husband just died.

There are only a few thrills in this movie that keep viewers on edge, but they only last briefly. The parts used to tell the story and build the plot tend to be boring, leaving viewers yearning for more of the action sequences that these scenes split up. The action scenes and fights are very good, but unfortunately not even this or the amazing cast is enough to make this movie worthwhile.
