Signs of an abusive relationship

• Engage in name-calling, insults, or continual criticism. Demonstrate a lack of trust and/or possessive behaviors, attempt to isolate the abused from friends and family, may monitor phone calls, texts, e-mail, or other forms of correspondence.

• Push, slap, kick, choke, or commit other acts of violence.

• Prevent the victim from leaving the home, calling police, paramedics or other forms of assistance.

• Force the victim to have sex or perform sex acts against his or her will, or ignore the victim's feelings regarding sex.

Domestic violence statistics

• One in four American women report that a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives has physically abused them.

• 90-95 percent of domestic violence victims are women, and as many as 95 percent of domestic violence perpetrators are men.
• 30 percent of Americans say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her husband or boyfriend in the past year.

• It is estimated that 71 percent of rape or sexual assault victims knew their offenders. Approximately 22 percent are raped by intimates.
• 3 million American children are exposed to domestic violence at home each year.

• When women are killed by their husbands, children are present in 25 percent of cases.
