Halloween in Madison

Halloween is here again. There are a number of events planned both in and around Madison again this year to celebrate the holiday. There are events that cater to all age groups. Whether you are looking for a night of partying, outdoor activities or family fun there are events that will cater to your needs.

Families will find fun during Halloween Week at the Wisconsin Historical Museum. Events will take place at 30 N. Carroll Street from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30 and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Events scheduled include arts and crafts and stories, as well as special characters wandering around the museums exhibits.

For those with young children the Madison Children's Museum, located at 100 State Street will be hosting Baby's First Halloween. On Oct. 29 there will be a costume contest. There will be music and refreshments will be provided. Admission for this event is $5. A costume parade on State Street will begin at 10 a.m.

Another fun family event will take place at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens on Thursday, Oct.29. Positively Pumpkins is a class that will be held to decorate pumpkins for the holiday. You will need to provide you own pumpkins and admission for the class is $9.

The Madison area will also host numerous haunted houses and hayrides for the Halloween season.

Dr. SCarys Haunted House, located at Jellystone Park in Fort Atkinson, will be open Halloween weekend, Oct. 30 and 31, from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. A corn maze will also be open during the day on Oct. 31 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Schuster's Farm, offering a corn maze, hayride and haunted forest, will be open through Oct. 31 in Deerfield. Admission costs for these events range from $2 to $10.

The Haunted Barn in Stoughton will be open Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $8. Refreshments and snacks will be available as well as novelties, toys and other Halloween items.

Come to Olin Park on Oct. 29, 30 and 31 between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. for the Horror in the Dark at Olin Park. The haunted house is a self-guided tour and the park itself can be a little creepy late at night adding to the experience. Admission for the event is $8. Money raised will go to the Wisconsin Multiple Sclerosis Society.

While family events and haunted houses will be fun for families and children there are also events scheduled for some more mature fun.

Halloween on State Street this year will be celebrated with the annual Freakfest. Freakfest 2009 will take place on Halloween night, Saturday, Oct. 31. The usual costume contest will take place again this year. Musical acts include headliners Third Eye Blind along with Cage the Elephant, Push Play and Locksley.

Madison has plenty to offer those looking for Halloween fun. There are events planned to please people of all ages. The opportunities are there to celebrate responsibly during the day and let loose during the night taking advantage of all the Madison area has to offer.
