Steinhofer took second in the three other invites he has played in this season, including his round at the WolfPack Invitational. At The Bridges, Steinhofer was only one of two players to shoot under par for the day, finishing with a 71. "I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't happy," said Steinhofer.
Wartgow has been finishing right behind Steinhofer the entire season. He has been the second individual finisher for the first six invites for the WolfPack. Wartgow has been consistent and reliable all season.
The three, four and five guys need to play up to their potential just a little more and Scheer feels if that happens, then the team will be just fine. Brian O'Connell, Mitch Kowaleski, and Cody Smith are all capable of playing better down the stretch.
Mitch Kowaleski is the only second-year player on the team. His experience will allow him to focus and pick up a few strokes as the post-season approaches. "Mitch, being the only second-year player on the team, keeps us in line and helps us out," said Wartgow.
The best round Cody Smith shot this season was on the first round at the Illinois Valley Classic on Sept. 18. If he can carry that form into the post-season, then he will be in good shape.
A dislocated kneecap that was suffered by Brian O'Connell put a halt to his hot start to the season. O'Connell was the top finisher for the WolfPack at their first two invites this season. He won individual medalist honors for his first-place finish at the Rock Valley Invitational with a score of 73.
The knee injury has slowed O'Connell's production as of late, as he has been hurting on the back nine of the last few invites. However, O'Connell looks to be getting healthier and hopes to return to form as the post-season begins on Oct. 8 at the Prairie View Golf Course in Byron, Ill.
The bottom line is the WolfPack must work on lowering their score as a team if they want to play for a national championship in June. MATC cannot rely on other teams playing poorly. They must focus on improving their own score.
The golf team knows that in the upcoming weeks they will have to beat Rock Valley College if they want to have a shot to play for a national championship. Despite only beating the Golden Eagles once so far this season, MATC is well aware that they are capable of finishing ahead of the Golden Eagles again when it really matters.
