Madison Area Technical College's Volunteer Center has an exciting year between alternative breaks, food drives and many local opportunities available for volunteer work.

Currently they are attempting to raise $1,000 by collaborating with other MATC clubs, between Volunteer fairs and donations to donate to the annual Aids Walk Wisconsin.

"The Volunteer Centers purpose is to provide service learning opportunities to students at MATC," said Kallie Kramer, Downtown MATC's Volunteer Center Director, "but we're participating in the Aids Walk because we want to take a stand against Aids. Thanks to Spencer White, who helped the Volunteer Center participate, we get to show our support for this event," said Kramer.

The Volunteer Center isn't the only group to participate through MATC. Collectively, the Volunteer Center, Pride Alliance, Black Student Union, Student Senate, Alliance for Animals-Student Chapter, College Democrats and the Native American Student Association have all donated to help reach MATC's goal of $1,000.

This fundraiser, in particular, is important to MATC because, although not advertised, it is a local issue. Madison has numerous resources and programs available to those who are infected with HIV or AIDS. The AIDS Network has various locations around Wisconsin, including Madison. It's mission, according to the website is to "offer support, education, and opportunities for the well-being of everyone touched by HIV/AIDS."

The AIDS Network provides legal advice, daily support, prevention resources, free testing and support groups to people in Madison and is available to those who are infected or their loved ones. What is beneficial about the AIDS Network and programs such as the AIDS Walk Wisconsin is that it brings the local struggle out of our communities for support.

The annual AIDS Walk Wisconsin is being held on the Summer Fest grounds on Oct. 11 to raise money for the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin Medical Center to provide more and better medical care to those who have HIV or AIDS.

MATC's Volunteer Center has other opportunities as well for those who want to volunteer. MATC focuses mainly on programs that face community issues such as homelessness, poverty, hunger and food, literacy, education and youth services. MATC also runs independent programs such as Santa's Wish List, tutoring for students, and volunteering with food pantries.
