Truax-Mitby Theater was peppered with family and friends in support of 63 new members in attendance for the fall induction ceremony of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). The short ceremony took place Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., and was lead by the chapters co-presidents, Sabrina Bodden and Jacinda Fenske, who took turns welcoming the 191 inductees from all MATC campuses, including online students. For those who did attend, Vice President of Learner Success Terry Webb and MATC District Board Member Dr. John Bales each congratulated the students and gave words of encouragement and praise.

"You decided to perform at the highest level to which you are capable," said Dr. Bales shortly before the new inductees where called by name to make an ordered procession around the stage, and collect their certificate folders.

These members are getting a good start on their commitment to PTK, with enhanced member credit for being in attendance for the fall induction. This upper one percent of the college signed and verbally pledged their allegiance while getting a jumpstart on one of the society's four hallmark's fellowship. At the reception afterwards, the new members spent time getting to know their chapter officers and had them meet their families.

Getting to know new chapter officers is just one reason Mike Avery attended. The highlight of his night was celebrating the honor of joining a nationally known honor society with his family and friends. In high school he wasn't allowed to take advanced classes because of his disability and now he's excited about finally getting the recognition he deserves for being a stellar student.

The requirements to enter the program include completing 12 credits at MATC and obtaining a GPA of 3.5 or greater. The students show their commitment to their education by meeting or exceeding these requirements. A one-time fee of $65 is also required, but those students interested in becoming an enhanced member have the chance to get a discount. This can be done by accruing 30 hours of service with 15 of those dedicated to PTK.
