Ever been to the library and needed to use a computer, but they were all full? Or need to watch a DVD for class and don't own a DVD player at home? Well the library staff has given a solution to the Madison Area Technical College students who don't have a laptop and need to use a computer or watch a DVD. The latest feature of the ever evolving MATC library is a Net-book and Portable DVD player rental system now in place and available to all MATC students.
The plan was in progress for a year and a half, and it has been off to a good start this fall. Over 100 students have rented a Net-book or DVD player, and the feedback has been great. It also keeps the library up to the times and helps expose students to the current technologies of the era.
The idea to incorporate a Net Book/DVD rental program emerged when the staff at the MATC libraries noticed that even with the computer labs students still needed more computers, but the space for more PC's just wasn't available.
Now, these days everyone knows what a DVD player is, but exactly what is a Net book? There isn't much of a difference between a Laptop and a Net-book. They do the same, in terms of providing programs such as Internet and Microsoft Word, but a Net Books actual size is smaller than a Laptop. But the processor is smaller so doing projects like a power point, wont work so well.
However, there is a process students have to go though to get one of these new nifty pieces of technology. Everything is handled at the front desk of the Library and all you need is your One Card. There is a Terms of Use that you must sign in order to use the Net-book/ DVD player, and you must treat it like your own! Each of the ten Net books cost $329 each and the DVD players cost $75, so this isn't kids stuff. In fact if you were to damage or even lose the item, you are responsible for it. There is a full replacement cost and your record will be placed on hold until it is replaced. There is no time limit so if you need to write a paper for three hours, go right ahead.
But the Net-books and DVD players can only be used in the library; but there might be an expansion of the program to outside the library.
Depending on how this rental system goes in the library, MATC may consider adding E-reader (electronic portable books) and a Text alert plan that alerts you when you book is soon due. Just one more way the library is the cool place to be on campus!
