Drag Queens and crowns
Jennifer Bell
Issue date: 10/7/09 Section: Entertainment
The show began with performances by emcee Desiree Williams, who got the crowd ready to salute with her rendition of Reba McIntyre's "Pour Me." Victoria followed up by kicking off her shoes and showing the crowd her "New Attitude" with her Patti Labelle impersonation.
The contestants took turns modeling for the crowd and judges in their best gowns, jewelry and pageant hair. The talent portion of the show was where the star shone. Judges were looking for entertainment and quality in performance and they found it in winner Jazmalyn Deterick.
Deterick accepted the crown as Miss Captain Dix 2009 and graciously thanked her sisters and supporters. Deterick sees her title as an opportunity to reach out and be an activist, role model and uplift her fellow sisters.
"It had been 13 years since my last pageant. I had some trouble until I figured out what was important. I work with people with disabilities and own my own business. You have to have that. Drag can be wonderful and you can make good money but you have to live in the real world. That's why I think education is so important. I have encouraged many girls to go to school and get a degree." She worries, "there are so many out there selling themselves on Craigslist for money and you don't have to do that. You can be a beautiful showgirl without demeaning yourself. Living our lifestyle you already get so many people who call us freaks without the ones that feed into the stereotype that so many have about us."
Deterick is proud to call herself an activist and gives her time and donations to help raise money for AIDS awareness. She notes, "in Madison there is so much support but the donations in Wisconsin Dells is not equal to what Madison raises." Deterick hopes to revitalize her community and inspire others to make positive changes in their lives.
