Softball team has chance to make nationals

"Hitters is not the ideal place to play at all," Caygill said. "Balls bounce in situations…in the outfield a ball could bounce right at our feet and bounce over your head. It's insane."

That wasn't the only insane thought of the day. In the 17-0 loss in game two, the WolfPack committed 10 errors. Even though the playing field is much different compared to an outdoor field, those types of errors cannot happen if this team wants to compete for a spot at the National Tournament.

"They know they can win," Pelzel said of her team. "They don't have doubts about winning. Defensively - take out (Kirkwood) - we are very good. We can hit the ball a little too. I think the biggest thing is, this happened last year too - because of our record everyone (at Regional's) underestimated what they can do. I think that will be to our advantage."

So while the 5-13 record may not impress many, Caygill knows the team is better than what comes out on paper.

"We just need to work hard," said Caygill - one of only three-second year players on the young team. "Somehow, each year we've gone to Regional's and pulled something out to come back and actually make a go at nationals. We've got good competition up there. I think if everyone plays the way we can - we should be fine."
