Nearly all of the stolen laptops were property of MATC. Students have only reported two cases of personal laptops being stolen this year. In all of 2008 there were eighteen computers stolen from MATC campuses.
The perpetrators first struck in January, with the most recent theft happening only a couple of days ago. The thief, or thieves, launched their attacks at the beginning of March, when there were seven laptops stolen from the technology services department. Then the offenders struck again in early April, when three laptops were stolen out of the Student Enrichment Center. Two of the three laptops were secured with cable locks; the other one was not secured. The cable locks were broken off the cases of the laptops. Security is unsure if there was forced entry into the room. The approximate value of these three laptops alone is around $3,900. Chief of security James Bottoni is hoping to bring an end to this problem before the perpetrators strike again.
Since this story broke, MATC security has received valuable information from students that has lead to several credible leads. They are working hard, along with the Madison Police Department, to find out who is responsible for stealing the thirty-plus laptops. The investigation is ongoing, and remains very active. The only positive aspect of this mess is that none of the laptops taken from campus contained any confidential information.
Keep your eyes peeled and your laptops on your lap. If you see something suspicious, or have any information concerning these thefts, call security immediately at (608) 243-4357 or go directly to their office, room 117, Truax.
