The following awards were received as part of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation Collegiate Newspaper Contest:
• First place, Freedom of Information Award - Justin Eells. The winning article, titled "School board members attempt to silence the public," was about the Madison School Board's effort to curtail public comment on an issue before the board. The judges wrote: "Thank you for reminding our public officials that keeping the public in meetings is an important role."
• Second place, Graphics - Kelly McDermott. Three hand-drawn illustrations from the 2007-08 school year were entered. The judges liked the "interesting and informative package, which combines artwork, text and shading."
• Second place, Sports Reporting - Charles Kurth. Judges said Kurth's entry, "From rags to riches," "did a good job bringing out both the situation the athlete has lived in and the human side of the athlete. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read."
• Second place, Best Advertisement - Catherine Botzum. Judges said Botzum's ad for Dream Lanes was "a clever ad that is sure to attract readers."
• Third place, Graphics - Dominique Fuccillo. The entry consisted of three hand-drawn illustrations. Judges singled out the illustration for "Human Seeking Happiness" as a highlight, stating that "the art subtly presents the physical things people think will make them happy."
• Third place, Photography - Devin Abshere. The photograph was of the women's basketball team celebrating the win that earned them a trip to nationals. Judges said the "photo captured the perfect moment of celebration."
• Third place, Best Advertisement - Rachel McNeill. The winning ad was an effort to recruit entertainment writers to The Clarion staff by playing on the interest in the Guitar Hero game.
• Honorable mention, Feature Writing - Matt Kelly.
Students who attended the conference had the opportunity to watch the state Supreme Court debate, learn more about industry trends, and participate in portfolio and resume critiques.
They also visited Lambeau Field and toured the Lee Remmel press box and Packer Hall of Fame.
