Of the many clubs at MATC, some of the most popular and successful are the social clubs here at MATC. Of their number are the Gay/Straight Alliance, Black Student Union, Orgullo Latino, Asian American Student Association, and the Native American Student Association.

The social clubs at MATC provide an opportunity for students to join a group that celebrates their culture and can provide a strong base for friendships. I was able to meet with people involved in Orgullo Latino and the Asian American Student Association; it was an interesting experience getting to learn about those clubs.

Those interested in the social clubs, or any club for that matter, should go visit the website or visit the Student Life office to ask about any clubs you might be interested in.

Orgullo Latino

Orgullo Latino, or Latin Pride, is the Latin club here at MATC. Rocio Martinez is the advisor to the club, and she helped start the club a number of years ago. Orgullo Latino has won Outstanding Club of the Year award, and they boast a membership of over 40 people.

The meetings are held all in Spanish, and a primary goal of the club is to celebrate Latino culture. They even have a soccer club for their members who want to play more casually then the school sponsored team. The club prides itself on helping members get access to scholarships, and the group is willing to help each other with things such as studying.

If you are interested in checking it out, meetings are held at 12:30pm in the Truax cafeteria on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Asian American Student Association

The AASA is our Asian American club, and they attempt to support those of Asian decent here at MATC. The current President is Der Xiong, and he and the other major participants in the club have been instrumental in growing the AASA this year.

A lot of the work has been to just get their name out and get members. Again, much like Orgullo Latino, AASA can help members get scholarships and opportunities in school they might not otherwise get.
