With the new school year comes a new opportunity for students from all walks of life to promote a healthy lifestyle and get involved in the intramural program here at MATC. The program offers a variety of activities for people of all skill levels and abilities. Whether you're a former phenom in football or a just a regular duffer on the golf course, or anywhere in between, MATC probably has an intramural program for you.
The intramural director would like to remind you that all of the sports are free of charge to students with a valid OneCard (except for golf and rock climbing). Fitness activities are an important component of the college experience, and intramurals provide opportunities to learn sportsmanship, team play, discipline and preparation, all of which can lead to success later in life.
Flag football is the first sport to get underway for the season, and is played on Mondays and Thursdays at 3:30 pm. The field is located behind the softball field and across the street from the main parking lot on the Truax Campus. All equipment will be provided, but students are encouraged to wear the necessary attire and bring something to drink as well. The first day of organized play is Sept. 15.
For all fans of the "other" futbal, the soccer program begins on Sept. 16. With a good turnout last year in the inaugural season of the program, co-ed soccer looks to be one of the more popular sports that MATC has to offer. Once again the equipment will be provided, but students are encouraged to wear proper attire and bring something to drink. The games are also held behind the softball fields and across from the main parking lot.
With the month of October comes two of the most popular programs that the Intramural program has to offer. Five-on-five basketball starts on Thursday, Oct. 16. The sport is open to both men and women of all skill levels, and all are encouraged to participate. Students are encouraged to register either as a team or an individual, and can compete either in the competitive league or the recreational league. The action on the competitive courts can be quite intense, and some good basketball is played there. If you're just looking to play for fun or pure enjoyment of the game, then the recreational league may be more your style. Either way, the basketball program provides an excellent opportunity for ballers of all skill levels to show what they've got on the court.
Also beginning in October is the volleyball season. With a similar format to basketball, students can sign up either as an individual, or as a co-ed team of four, with up to two reserves. Volleyball will be held on Tuesday evenings in the main gym at Truax campus.
In addition, there will be special events throughout the year, including a golf outing at The Bridges Golf Course on Wednesday, Oct. 8, for just $5, and two bowling tourneys in November and December. Also, MATC offers passes for rock climbing at Boulder's Gym at a very significant discount.
For any questions, concerns, or comments regarding any of the intramural sports offered at MATC, send an email to intramurals@matcmadison.edu, or feel free stop by the Fitness Center office (Room 112A) and the friendly staff there will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
