Best places to hike are found nearby

MEGHAN CARPENTER, CLARION ARTS AMD CULTURE EDITOR

Wisconsin's naturally beautiful landscape, with its rolling hills and boundless lakes, make for some of the best hiking spots which are conveniently located in your back yard! Madison, and the surrounding areas, contains some of the most beautiful, and challenging, hikes in the state. A particularly beautiful path, especially at this time of year, is located directly downtown, and on the UW campus. The Lakeview trail is a simple walk, beginning behind the Memorial Union, and ending by Eagle Heights apartments. With a sporadic, beautiful view of the lake and the fall colors joining you makes this one of Madison's best hikes to go on in a short amount of time.

Quarantine

Final 30 minutes of this horror flick are very intense

By Chris Johll, Clarion Staff Writer

Horror films often lack creativity and genuine scares. And while ultimately a bit flawed, Quarantine manages to be both original and terrifying. Quarantine follows a cameraman and a news reporter who shadow the Los Angeles fire department for a night.

'Chasing Smoke' is a mystery story highlighted by vivid characters

By JESSE COOPER, Clarion Opinion EditorEditor

Madison based Bleakhouse Books is due to release ,'s latest dark crime mystery "Chasing Smoke" next month. Author of "Lost Dog", Cameron astonishes with dark characters, rich with dimension and easily relatable; ugly in their skin as well as in tone, but beautifully crafted with feathered touches of soft sincerity. The protagonist Detective Kadash is as murky as Portland's Columbia River as he grumbles through the rollercoaster ride of a potential homicide case with resistance from all sides of the fight. Sharing a cancer doctor as well as this particular case with the recently deceased, Kadash's interest carries him deeper into the rabbit hole

Max Raabe musicians are multi-talented

By Matt Hendry, Clarion Staff Writer

From the opening number to the fond farewell after the 3 (yes 3!) encore songs, the energetic and eclectic Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester sent the audience from the confines of the new election season, circa 2008, back to a simpler (or at least it seems) time having the songs sung range from the 1920s and stopping in the middle of the 1930s at 1935. The songs were not entirely in English either, but there was an alternating between when Max did to when he sang in German. The songs included Singin' in the Rain to Du bist meine Greta Garbo (english translation: You are my Greta Garbo) to the energetic, but not the total end, Cosi Cosa.

'Santagold' is upbeat, memorable

By Chris Johll, Clarion Staff Writer

Santi White (a.k.a. Santagold) is often compared to M.I.A, though the two are rather different. Some songs, like "Creator", do sound a bit like M.I.A., but have their own unique flavor. This album has a good range of beats, fusing genres like ska and pop.
